The Hamilton Company acquires legendary Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston at 130 Brighton Avenue

Allston, MA The Hamilton Company, owned by real estate magnate Harold Brown, has acquired the building at 130 Brighton Ave., home of the legendary Sunset Grill and Tap for the past 27 years.

In addition to the Sunset Grill & Tap, which is located on the first floor of the two-story building, the property also houses Patron’s restaurant and lounge and a soon-to-be-announced restaurant featuring Asian food.

Built in the 1920s, the 22,000 s/f building once served as offices for the Bank of Boston and noted sports attorney Bob Wolfe. Hamilton Company, located at 39 Brighton Ave., purchased the facility from MABB, LLC at an undisclosed price.

Marc Berkowitz, who owns both the Sunset Grill & Tap and Patron’s, said he has known Harold Brown for 40 years and is “delighted” with Brown’s decision to purchase the building.

“This is great news for myself and for the neighborhood. Harold Brown has invested heavily in the area and Hamilton Company’s financial prowess will provide stability to the neighborhood for many years to come,” said Berkowitz.

Located at the corner of Brighton Ave. and Harvard St., the Sunset Grill & Tap boasts good food and popular, locally-brewed craft beer. In all, the Sunset Grill & Tap offers 113 different beers on tap and close to 400 bottled beers.

Patron’s, located on the second floor, features Mexican food, a lounge and function facilities to accommodate 400 people.

Brown, who recently converted a Hamilton-owned parking lot on nearby Malvern St. into an apartment building, said the purchase of 130 Brighton Ave., fits in nicely with Hamilton’s master plan to provide more housing and amenities in the area.

“This is a great neighborhood and it’s right in our backyard. We see the need for moderate-priced housing and, with it, great potential to enhance and vitalize the area,” said Brown.

The Hamilton Company, Inc., founded in 1954 by Harold Brown, is one of the largest privately-owned, full-service real estate companies in Massachusetts with more than $1.7 billion in total assets. Hamilton currently owns in excess of 6,000 rental units and 3 million s/f of commercial property throughout eastern Mass.
