The Iron Workers and the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Trust (IMPACT) honored local ironworkers, contractors and customers for completing the safest, most complex and most creative projects of 2014 at the North American Iron Workers/IMPACT Labor Management Conference in Las Vegas.
CCB, Inc., working with Ironworkers Local 7 in Boston, and Education First, was one of the ten finalists selected for the award.
The decision was made by a panel of independent judges who critiqued each submission on the safety, complexity and ingenuity used to achieve success.
"We are very proud of all of the finalists in the first-ever Project of the Year award competition," said IMPACT Management co-chair, Bill Brown. "We are inspired by the projects submitted, and we are expected to see even more submissions coming in the fourth quarter of this."
"Our aim is to make sure all workers come home safely each day," added Iron Workers general president Walter Wise. "The Iron Workers and IMPACT are excited to see these projects completed with a focus on safety."
The project for the Education First corporate headquarters, was to erect and detail a 10-story tall, structurally supported, glazed architectural atrium.
This atrium is referred to as the "Waterfall" feature. Work included design constructability assistance with fabricator 3-D modeling interface, 3-D scanning of existing conditions, 3-D field layout, temporary shoring design and steel erection of 60 tons of 10" diameter complex node pipe assemblies inclusive of 330 different geometrical configurations.
The finalists were recognized at the conference and given a few minutes to speak about their projects. The Project of the Year award honors the safest, most challenging projects completed in the last calendar year. Numerous contractors go above and beyond the call of duty to not only provide safe conditions for their ironworkers on challenging jobs with unique circumstances, but to also demonstrate ingenuity and creativity.
