As we enter the New Year and the beginning of my term as chair of ABC Massachusetts, I feel fortunate in several ways. First, it’s an honor not just to serve as chairman, but to be one of the few people to get a second opportunity in that role.

I’m also pleased to serve at a time when Massachusetts is being led by the Baker administration. I have known and respected Charlie for a long time, having served as a selectman in Swampscott a few years before he did. Those of us who were involved with government affairs during the eight years of the previous administration can’t help but appreciate being consulted by state leaders who are eager to hear what we think about issues affecting the construction industry.

The third reason I feel my timing is good is because of the strategic planning exercise started by my predecessor, Brian Jurgens; I believe this represents a great opportunity for ABC. Guided by Laura Cataldo of Maxim Consulting Group, we have created a five-year strategic plan for the organization. Not only does the plan include ambitious goals for ABC’s role in areas like workforce development, membership and legislative effectiveness, it also provides detailed roadmaps for achieving these important goals. The January board meeting will be devoted to engaging board members and getting their input regarding execution of the plan.

In the day-to-day whirlwind of running our businesses, it’s easy to lose sight of just how much progress ABC has made in recent years. A group that not long ago was on the edges of the political process in Massachusetts has now developed strong relationships with political figures from both parties.

I am also proud to be leading ABC during the first year of our ABC Building our Future Scholarship. We raised over $125,000 last year for this scholarship. We have filed our application with the IRS for tax exempt status. We expect to be able to announce our first scholarships later this year.

Our five-year strategic plan provides a pathway to continue to grow our influence and enhance our reputation so that we can be the leading voice of the open shop. I hope each of you will take an interest in and support the new plan,
