The Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC) honored Colantonio, Inc. for its work on the D. Justin McCarthy College Center project at Framingham State University (FSU). A merit award was presented to the team at the AGC's biennial awards gala.
Colantonio teamed up with Framingham State University, the Mass. State College Building Authority, CBT Architects, Ostrow Electric, Oak Hill Construction (formerly Restoration Preservation Masonry) and S.M. Harrington Contracting, Inc.
Built in 1976, the six-story, 110,000 s/f building is the social center of the campus. A complete renovation, performed in seven phases, was required to accommodate the needs of a growing student and faculty population. The team transformed the campus police station, radio station, kitchen, dining hall, administration offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and bathrooms. The electrical and mechanical systems were upgraded and the building's entire brick façade was replaced.
The team encountered many unforeseen conditions, including extensive broken underground piping and the need for a total brick façade replacement, which challenged the schedule.
Team members are commended for their outstanding efforts toward keeping the building operational, active and safe while keeping the project on track. Excellent communication, creative problem solving and, at times, working around the clock helped make the project a success.
The AGC, whose jury consisted of eight industry professionals, recognized a total of eighteen project teams at the 2011 biennial Awards Gala.
