Diversified Project Management completes Codman Square Health Center's Walczak Wing

Diversified Project Management (DPM) completed the new, four-story addition and interior renovation of the Codman Sq. Health and Education Center (CSHEC) at 637 Washington St. - a project generated by a partnership between the Codman Sq. Health Center and the Codman Academy Charter Public School. Made possible in large-part by a $7.95 million Federal HRSA Grant obtained through the Affordable Care Act in 2010 with the assistance of DPM, the $18.2 million Codman Sq. Health and Education Center's addition - known as the William J. Walczak Wing, provides space for the operations of the Codman Sq. Health Center and Codman Academy and also allows for increased programmatic interaction between the two entities. The 34,000 s/f addition includes 22 exam rooms and will allow the Health Center to add up to 5,000 new patients with capacity for an additional 30,000 visits per year. Benefits to the Codman Academy include an expanded footprint of over 11,000 s/f, which houses eight additional classrooms and two new science laboratories, further expanding the educational space for its 145 students. The new building addition complements the architecture of the existing area and maintains the character and integrity of the neighborhood. Designed to achieve a LEED Gold certification by the USGBC, and one of the first sustainable projects of its kind in the area, the new center is highly energy efficient and features modernized amenities such as a black-box theatre and a full service kitchen & dining center. DPM provided comprehensive construction management oversight, beginning at the initial procurement of federal funds and support throughout the pre-construction phase to manage the schedule and provide assurance that the buildings complied with drawings, specifications, bid documents and all local and state permits and regulations. DPM project executive Frank Kennedy, along with senior project manager, Lorrie Adamz coordinated all activities of the design/build team including HKT Architects, RW Sullivan Engineering and Shawmut Design and Construction to assist in the delivery of a first-class facility, all while remaining operable during construction and resulting in a seamless transition into the new addition. "All aspects of this project were timely completed due to the stellar support and involvement of DPM," said Anthony Stankiewicz, president of CSHEC. "Lorrie Adamz hit the ground running and provided us with extraordinary leadership, around the clock support and attention to detail which proved essential for the success of the Codman Sq. Health & Education Center project."
