Kahlil Olmstead, general manager of G.O. Services and director of community outreach with Gilbane Building Company, joined mayor Thomas Menino and other area businesses in the 10th annual Walmart Teen Challenge Golf Classic. The event raised money for Teen Challenge Boston Men's Campus, a program that provides youth, adults and families with an effective and comprehensive solution to problems with addiction.
The Golf Classic was just one of the ways Gilbane is reaching out to help members of the Boston community. Other recent community involvement by Gilbane includes a strategic alliance with the Madison Park Technical Vocational High School in Roxbury to reach young people with an aptitude for engineering and construction management during their formative years; renovating the soup kitchen at Haley House; and volunteering with the ACE Mentor Program and Rebuilding Together Boston.
In addition, Gilbane is reaching out to area workers with its M/WBE Contractor Training Program, currently in its second year. Gilbane has developed this 'best practices' program for small M/WBE businesses in the construction trades. Class topics include accounting, cost estimating, marketing, safety, procurement, technology, project management, insurance, purchasing, scheduling, business development, risk analysis, and financial management in an effort to increase the competition in the marketplace and give minority contractors the tools to compete at the highest level.
