Mattapan Community Health Center (MCHC) is nearing the first closing on a land acquisition that will bring a $32 million health facility to the neighborhood. With the completion of the agreement, MCHC now owns 6 of the 8 parcels of land on Blue Hill Ave. where the new center will be build. The remaining parcels are expected to close this month. A ground breaking is scheduled for September 10th.
MCHC has put together, through financing and philanthropy, $30 million of the $32 million project goal. The new center is expected to create 150 new jobs.
Funding for the new MCHC facility has come from four sources: ARRA funds (stimulus funds already awarded), loans, New Markets Tax Credit Equity and philanthropy. Launched earlier this year, the campaign to generate philanthropic support for the new Mattapan Community Health Center facility has already borne fruit. To date, MCHC has raised more than $9 million or 75% toward its philanthropic goal of $12 million.
Key contributions have been secured from the Boston Medical Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Partners HealthCare, Greg Bulger, Richard Slifka, Children's Hospital Boston, Denise and Bill Finard, The Smith Family Foundation, the State Street Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital.
The 50,000 s/f building will allow MCHC to double the number of patients it serves and triple patient visits.
The new development has been designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating and has applied to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for certification. The design incorporates many green and sustainable features such as the use of recycled and regional materials, energy efficient HVAC and lighting systems and a green roof.
