Suffolk Construction awarded $15.3 million MBTA Revere Transit & Streetscape project: project team includes AECOM and Arrowstreet

Suffolk Construction was recently awarded the $15.3 million design-build contract for the MBTA Revere Transit Facility & Streetscape project. The 21,000 s/f project will feature construction of a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge over Ocean Ave., an elevated plaza deck above Wonderland MBTA Station, a central plaza, and an at-grade pedestrian crossing over Revere Beach Blvd. Various park improvements will also be part of the project. Suffolk recently broke ground on the MBTA Revere Transit Facility & Streetscape project, which will provide safer and more convenient pedestrian connections between Wonderland Station, adjacent neighborhoods, and Revere Beach. The project will include new elevated walkways, two new stairways connecting the sidewalks on both sides of the project and the outbound platform to the elevated areas, and two new elevators to provide accessible connections between the sidewalks, transit station, and elevated plazas and walkways. The MBTA station will remain operational throughout construction. The Suffolk project team will coordinate site access without disruption to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, as well as the each. Suffolk was selected by the MBTA and the city in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to provide construction management services for the transit facility. Suffolk's design-build partner is AECOM, and Arrowstreet is the design architect, as well as consultant for the project's owners. Funding for the project came from a $20 million TIGER Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded to the city in February 2011. Only 54 projects were funded throughout the U.S. Suffolk is also working on the MBTA Wonderland Station Busway and Garage project that is currently underway. The MBTA Revere Transit Facility & Streetscape project, as well as the busway and parking garage, will be completed in summer 2012. Both projects are central elements of the city of Revere's plans to create a $500 million mixed-use transit oriented development at Revere Beach. Waterfront Sq. as it is known will contain a hotel, and office building, retail space, and nearly 1,000 market rate housing units. Eurovest Development will begin construction of the first residential building shortly.
