Greenfield, MA When completed this fall, the new Greenfield Trial Court facility will replace the existing Franklin County Courthouse constructed in the 1930s, consolidating five court departments; the law library, registry of deeds and district attorney’s office under one roof. With six courtrooms, separate secure circulation and 23 holding cells, the updated courthouse will add space and modern amenities for its occupants, maintain original light fixtures, millwork and building carvings, for restoration and relocation throughout the building.

Preserving the historic front of the existing courthouse for use by the clerk and probation departments, the 104,000 s/f facility will add a new four-story addition to the back, which will include a new entry to the facility, courtroom spaces, the law library, detainee circulation and jury pool room. The new courthouse will provide energy efficiency and sustainable features, including a green roof covered in plants, with a goal of LEED silver designation.

Utilizing BIM technology, the Wayne J. Griffin Electric Inc. team is responsible for the installation of a power distribution system, as well as lighting throughout the facility. Systems for lighting control, lighting protection, fire alarm, Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA), and elevator landing, for secure transport of detainees, are also part of the company’s electrical contract, in addition to a generator with Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).

Under the direction of the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) in Boston, the construction team includes construction manager, Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., architect Leers Weinzapfel Associates, and electrical engineer Consentini Associateis – A Terra Tech Co. The on-site Wayne J. Griffin Electric team is being led by senior project manager Tommy Lee and foreman Scott Miller.
