2024 Women in Construction: Melissa Galgano, Hancock Associates

Who or what inspired you to join the AEC industry? I have always liked problem solving and the creativity associated with it. I became interested in engineering and site design after a conversation with my dad. This was when I was still in high school trying to figure out what I wanted to do.

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? My greatest professional achievement in the past 12 months has been overseeing the completion of the St. Regis Residences, Boston, which is located on the harbor in Boston’s Seaport District.

Who or what inspired you to join the AEC industry? My father inspired me to join the AEC industry. He was an engineer in my birth country and with his skills was able to build our family home and take care of his family. I was in awe of his leadership and focus and wanted to achieve what he achieved.

What has been the driving force behind your success in the AEC industry? From the outset of my career in the AEC industry, I’ve been fueled by the recognition and support of my colleagues and superiors. Their acknowledgment of my hard work and problem-solving skills has boosted my confidence and served as a catalyst for my professional growth.

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? For the past two plus years I’ve had the pleasure of working on an upcoming housing project in Jamaica Plain. It is a 100% affordable 45-unit condominium. Once completed, it will notably be the most colorful building in JP!

Who or what inspired you to join the AEC industry? I did not realize architecture was a white male-dominated field until my first year of college. The first architect I met was a woman. She taught architecture as an elective in my high school, and I was in her course for three years.

What are your goals for the future? I’m hoping to continue to guide and mentor emerging professionals using my 25+ years in the profession, during much of which I did construction administration for at least one project at a time.
